On Friday, plans were unveiled for the construction of a large music center on Kibbutz Eilon land in the Western Galilee, which will replace the facilities for workshops and masterclasses conducted there at present.
The Keshet Eilon Mastercourse, founded in 1990 by the members of Kibbutz Eilon and led by the director of the project, Gilad Sheba, has developed into an international institution with a focus on string instruments, especially the violin, and includes educational concert activity throughout the year. The project reached a turning point with the privatization of the kibbutz and its dissolution as a communal settlement: the land and facilities which house the project are now in private hands and it must decide its own future. Aware of the danger facing Keshet Eilon, Gilad Sheba initiated the establishment of a non-profit educational music institution which would replace it, and has obtained the necessary permits to build it. |

The campus of the planned center will spread over a 28-dunam area and will include over 100 practice, teaching and accommodation rooms; offices; club rooms for students and faculty; a cafeteria; and an auditorium. The acquisition of funding for the center has not yet been completed, and will depend on various sources, including private donations. Its status as a not-for-profit organization will help attract the needed contributions. Sheba intends to widen the center's international collaboration and its activity in the area of string instruments, especially violin, and establish a school that will function on an ongoing basis throughout the year.
