What’s new at Keshet Eilon? At the beginning of last week students from the classical music department at Thelma Yellin High School of the Arts came to a “musical camp” with us. Events like this are always a cause for celebration, both because we are happy to collaborate with colleagues and place our extensive facilities at their disposal, and also because these students filled all of Kibbutz Eilon with most wonderful musical sounds. I was greatly impressed by the way the students worked together and also by the guidance they received from their teachers in the classical music department, under the direction of Moshe Aharonov, a former student of ours who played the violin in one of our very first summer courses in the early1990s. A renewed encounter of this kind with a former student who has developed into a musician and a teacher in his own right is a heart-warming experience.
During the time they spent at Keshet Eilon, the Thelma Yellin students held three concerts before setting out for home. They have barely departed, and already a group of jazz students from the same school is due to arrive at the beginning of the week. Thelma Yellin’s jazz department, which is directed by Yossi Regev, visits Keshet Eilon every year, and I am eagerly awaiting their performances, too.
And that’s by no means all, because at the end of the week we have the concert, which forms part of the Schubertiade celebrations. Franz Schubert was such a prolific composer that, although he was only in his early thirties when he died, he managed to leave hundreds of works behind him. The Schubertiade is celebrated by admirers of his work close to the date of his birthday, which falls on January 31st. The event’s opening concert will take place here in Keshet Eilon’s Bar-Uryan Hall on Friday, January 25th at 21.00, and, apart from Der Erlkönig, other works will also be performed.
